“Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Programme”

The MMA Programme is made up of three main types of class. Each brings very specific attributes to the overall art of MMA and are trained separately and later blended together. BJJ is a massive part to our overall MMA style and we run separate BJJ classes (our second programme) to ensure this developed adequately.

SUBMISSION WRESTLING: In these lessons you will learn the essential techniques to build a strong  “Ground Game” so important in MMA. Later we will include striking on the floor (Ground and Pound) that will develop into full MMA sparring drills and techniques.

KICK-BOXING: In these lessons you will learn all that is required to build a strong “Stand Up Game” where all MMA fights begin. You will also build a take-down strategy and defence later developing into full MMA sparring drills and techniques.

BOXING: In these lessons you will focus on and refine your boxing as this is the bedrock of an effective  “Stand Up Game”.  Along with this you will develop a solid “Clinch Game” that will open up opportunities to take the fight where you desire playing to your strengths.

There are three level of progression within the MMA programme.

FOUNDATION: Is for newer members in Submission Wrestling, Kick Boxing.  This is essential technique training with a focus on high percentage fundamentals. It is structured on a rolling 12 week programme so if you miss a class that subject will be covered again soon.

INTERMEDIATE: Is for members who have completed all the Foundation Classes and have been invited to progress to the next level in Submission Wrestling, Kick Boxing and Boxing.  This is progressively more strenuous than the Foundation class with the instruction aimed at a deeper level of technical knowledge and ability.

ADVANCED: Are for members who are intending to spar heavily or even compete in the future and are invited from the intermediate classes.  Advanced techniques are practiced under increasing pressure.

“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Programme”

This class intended for anyone at all levels to advance their grappling skills through the practice of BJJ with the use of a Gi – a traditional Martial Arts uniform, often white or blue in colour (but do come in a wide variety of other colours and designs). You can progress through a belt system to mark your development.

The Sunday class is our BJJ “Fundamentals” session. It is aimed at newer students in BJJ although all our members are welcome.  This is essential technique training with a focus on high percentage fundamentals. It is structured on a rolling 12 week programme so if you miss a class that subject will be covered again soon.

BJJ is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (Gi and No-Gi) and as the backbone of the floor fighting method for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition or self defense.

Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through the grades / belts.

Voodoo Gym is proud to be a member of the Combat Base BJJ – Technical Laboratories association ran by Darren and Helen Currie. We take our lead and guidance of BJJ from Darren and Helen as well as other member gyms and coaches of Combat Base. Any grades / belts are awarded and verified directly by them. And we regularly host Darren and Helen at our gym as well as attend events organised by Combat Base.
